How important is it to combine neuro-ophthalmology and uveitis?
Neuro-Ophthalmology and Uveitis are two areas of Ophthalmology that study ophthalmological manifestations related to systemic diseases. The first one involves structures from the eye to the central nervous system. The second one studies ocular inflammatory processes, especially those related to diseases that affect other parts of the human body (such as rheumatological, infectious, and neurological). Therefore, I believe that the combination of these two specializations enables better assistance to patients, going beyond activities I already do as an Ophthalmologist, which involves the promotion of eye health, treatment clinical and surgical diseases restricted to the eye (such as retinal diseases, glaucoma, cataract, etc) and complementary test (such as fluorescein angiography, ocular ultrasound, optical coherence tomography, etc).
Diseases, signs and associated symptoms
The main signs and symptoms of patients with uveitis and neuro-ophthalmological diseases are:
reduced visual acuity, red eye, eye pain, diplopia (double vision), eye deviation, reduced field of vision, pupil abnormalities, nystagmus (involuntary eye movements), ptosis ("drooping eyelid") and proptosis ("bulging eyes").
Several diseases may be associated to these signs and symptoms (see below some of them), being important the evaluation by an Ophthalmologist. If you want to make an appointment with a specialist, click HERE.
